Reading Medieval Manuscripts

Gothic, merchant, humanistic — 14th- and 15th-century handwriting comes in many forms, and each poses its own challenges for HTR model training. Drawing on concrete case studies across manuscript types, this poster maps the most common recurring difficulties in training text recognition for late medieval scripts, and reflects on how much custom model performance actually varies depending on script type, layout, and the function the document was originally created to serve.
