Rethinking the Company Raj: Unlocking Multilingual Archives on Colonial Education through OCR and AI

Colonial India's educational history is scattered across multilingual, multinational archives that no single researcher can manually navigate. Using Transkribus OCR and AI-assisted semantic search across missionary correspondence, administrative records, and published materials, this project uncovers the entangled networks of actors, languages, and institutions that shaped education under the late Company Raj — offering a model for transnational, AI-enabled colonial history.
